Luqmaan Khan, 25, has been formally charged with the illegal possession of a machine gun, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware announced on Monday. Khan faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison if convicted.
According to the Department of Justice, evidence recovered by law enforcement includes a notebook in which Khan detailed plans for using firearms to carry out an attack, as well as methods to evade detection afterward. The notebook also contained a hand-drawn map of the University of Delaware's police station, labeling entrances and exits.
The investigation began following a traffic stop on November 24, where police recovered a loaded handgun, ammunition, and an armored ballistic plate. The following day, an FBI search of Khan's residence yielded a rifle, a scope, 11 additional magazines, a tactical vest with a ballistic plate, and a handgun fitted with an illegal machine gun conversion device.
Court documents indicate that Khan, who was reportedly born in Pakistan, told police that "becoming a martyr is one of the greatest things you can do."
In response to the charges, University of Delaware interim president Laura Carlson stated, "The university has temporarily separated the student from the university, including a ban from all UD campuses while legal matters are being resolved. We have been working closely with law enforcement throughout this matter and are sharing this information with you now that we have been cleared to do so."
